Plants are amazing! All are welcome to participate in an event being held at Argotti Botanic Gardens in Floriana to celebrate the wonderful diversity of plants and their fundamental role in our lives. Argotti Botanic Gardens of the University of Malta, in cooperation with the Department of Biology – Faculty of Science, UK Society of Biology, the University Science Students’ Society – S-Cubed, and MCAST, is organizing an educational open weekend “How plants can help us change the world” between 17th and 19th April 2015.

Friday 17th will be reserved for Biology students in secondary schools and sixth forms. The Hon. Evarist Bartolo, Minister of Education and Employment, will open the Outdoor Learning Experience. This will be followed by the launch of the 5 themes of ‘How Plants Can Change the World’, after which students will be able to visit stalls to explore the themes with their teachers. Undergraduate students will be helping in the event. On Friday, 17th April, the Outdoor Learning Experience will be open to the public, and families are welcome between 13:30hrs and 15:30hrs.

On Saturday between 09:00hrs and 16:00hrs and Sunday between 09:00hrs and 13:00hrs the Outdoor Learning Experience will be open to children of all ages accompanied by guardians. Families are most welcome to attend.

The event provides a rare opportunity to discover some unusual plants and to learn Biology outside the classroom. Through the series of displays, demonstrations, experiments and hands-on activities, the event promotes a better understanding of plants and innovations in plant science. Plant Diversity for Multiple Uses, Herbs and Medicine, Plants and Engineering, Plants and Waste Water, Plants and Climate Change are just a few topics that are going to be investigated.

Staff at the Argotti Botanic Gardens are passionate about the fascinating world of plant science and would like to share their enthusiasm with others and inspire people to think about plants in a new way. Everybody is welcome to join this initiative.
