PLEASE TOUCH! Historical Archaeology at the Inquisitor’s Palace organizes a lecture and hands-on session by Russell Palmer.
Russell Palmer is a PhD candidate in the Historical Archaeology Research Group and Department of Archaeology at Ghent University, Belgium. He is funded by the BOF (Ghent University) and is working on a dissertation entitled "An Archaeology of Comparative Colonialism: material culture, institutions, and cultural change in Malta.
During the early years of the nineteenth century the building commonly known as the Inquisitor’s Palace was appropriated by the British colonial administration. Initially used as a military infirmary, by the 1830s it was housing officers from regiments barracked in the Three Cities. Based on artefacts recovered during archaeological excavations at the Palace (1998–2002), the evening will explore the living conditions and daily lives of building’s nineteenth-century inhabitants, providing new information on a poorly understood period of the site’s history. As the first archaeological assemblages from the period to be recording in Malta, they also shed light on to local traditions of production and Malta’s place in imperial networks of trade and communication. The evening will encompass a talk followed by a unique opportunity to handle artefacts ranging from Maltese pottery to Dutch gin bottles, and more besides. There is only one rule: PLEASE TOUCH!
