After following the epic narrative of the Great Siege through Francesco Balbi di Correggio’s daily diary notes, you are now invited to visit Heritage’s Malta International Exhibition‘1565 – The Great Siege of Malta’, wherein you can see more than 150 objects which relate to the Order of St John and to this legendary battle.
Being held in collaboration with the National Library of Malta, this exhibition which will be open to the public between September 5 and December 6, 2015, is being hosted within the Statal Rooms of the Grand Master’s Palace in Valletta, under the Patronage of HE, the President of Malta.
The range of exhibits in this exhibition, have both local and foreign provenance. Although some of the local artefacts can usually be viewed at local museums and other entities, a number of them have never been displayed to the public. Interestingly, for this occasion, Heritage Malta has also purchased some objects from abroad to enrich this national collection. Moreover, amongst the items which were borrowed from other countries in order to be included in this exhibition, one finds several components of decorated armour pieces, which will be re-united for the first time with their counterpart local elements, after more than 200 years.
With such a distinguished collection, you will have the opportunity to explore documents that explain the situations and the decisions which eventually led to the colossal battle between the Order of St John and the Ottoman Empire in Malta. You can also follow the stratagems and the procedures that were undertaken during this siege, and view some of the weapons and armour that were used during this conflict. Ultimately, you will be able to immerse yourself further in this saga of the Great Siege by experiencing a virtual meeting with none other than Grand Master Jean de la Valette.
