This story is adapted from a Chinese ancient legend about an old monk and his three students. One day, in a small temple deep in the mountain, the monk asked his students whether they can still recall the reasons which led them to the temple.

“Why?” they asked themselves. Why had they come all the way to the mountain? So they retraced their steps to the beginning, when they first had arrived.

The first, a troublesome monk, recalled that time when he had tried to assist his master in bringing water to the temple. It was tough work, and the hardheaded student who tried to handle it all, ended up falling into the well! Fortunately, the master saved him and since that day, they worked together, chanted Buddhist scripture and grew in their faith towards a good life.

The second of the students, a fat and greedy monk, was also skilled in the art of Chinese Kung Fu. He too, recalled the time when he was faced with the difficult task of fetching water from the mountain. However, he was not alone – the first student was already there. They had to decide who of them should carry out the task. Ultimately, they decided to carry the water together – to share the load, and benefit from their work equally.

Finally, the third student came along. He was thin and spent the entire day reading scriptures from an endless scroll. The three now had to decide who of them was to fetch and carry the water. None did. Thirsty, the three students started to grow distant from each other. Until one day, the oil lamp in the temple overturned and caused a big fire, and the three students had no other choice but to work together…
