Location: The Royal Pharmacy, Republic Street

The Royal Pharmacy still retains the facade, display windows and interiors it had when it was first opened. The proprietors still hold an interesting collection of artefacts, instruments, preparations etc which have fallen into disuse but which mark the historic moment in time when these ceased to be in daily use by the pharmacists. Materials are usually mahogany and brass and glass for apothecary’s balance and weights; mortars and pestles in ceramic, stone and/ or alabaster and hardwood.

Naqqas ir-Risku tad–Dijabete – Minimise the Risk of Diabetes. Diabetes awareness services will be offered to the adult public visiting the installations inside the Royal Pharmacy. Practicing Pharmacists, academic Pharmacists and pharmacy students will be on hand to measure BMI, administer short lifestyle questionnaires and screen adults for Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (T2DM) or risk of T2DM.

The QaM Project {EuroPharm Forum ( WHO/Euro)} QaM stands for ‘Questions that patients should ask about their medicines (…and pharmacists should respond to). It is a project of the EuroPharm Forum (WHO/Euro) of which the Malta Chamber of Pharmacists is a founder member(1992). The QaM project was piloted Europ wide including Malta’ The Chamber shall implement it on a random sample of the adult Maltese population attending the Chamber/MPSA installations at the Royal Pharmacy and its precincts through students and their tablets(electronic). Results shall be announced later.

Amazing Human Body. In order to generate the interest in the health sciences of our younger visitors, we shall run a competition on the hour from 7 to 9pm ( time when children should be around and would still be lively) to complete correctly a public health publication for children, cartoon style, on the human body. Prizes will be presented to the first completed entries.

Active Aging – Adult Vaccination. This event takes the form of a small exhibition with relevant posters related to active aging and awareness about adult vaccination. There will also be a video display with captions in ENG language on the subject. The stand will be manned by a pharmacists and students, leaflets will also be distributed.

Edutainment – L-Ispizjar, It-tabib, il-Pazjent………..u r-ricetta. Pharmacy students, members of the Malta Pharmaceutical Students Association will give 3 performances representing different types of doctors, pharmacists and patients and through a humourous script and situations will attempt to educate the public on the significance and usefulness of the prescription as a scientific tool of doctors and pharmacists in the best interest of the patient. This is nescessary in the present socio cultural moment in time in Malta. Performances will be held near the florist stand in the corner between Republic Street and St. John’s street.

 

Happy Birthday Crystallography! / The Silver Bullet. A presentation and videos will be displayed on LCD screen at one of the stations inside the Royal Pharmacy accompanied by a senior pharmacy student who will explain what is happening the on screen. These will include the applications to research in Computer – aided drug design of Crystallography on the occasion of the International year of Crystallogrhpy; and a video showing the highlights of the Science breakthrough of 2013 – teaching the immune system to fight cancer.
