Earth Speakr Workshop for Kids

Earth Speakr Workshop for Kids – 17th October 2020 at German Maltese Circle

  • Date & Time
    • October 5 - 13, 2020

Olafur Eliasson, Earth Speakr, 2020

Earth Speakr is created by Olafur Eliasson with his studio, kids, creative partners, and a group of researchers and experts, and is funded by the Federal Foreign Office on the occasion of the German Presidency of the Council of the European Union 2020 and realised in cooperation with the Goethe-Institut.  The Malta Office of the Goethe-Institut, represented by the German Maltese Circle in Valletta is hosting an event in relation to this project.

Earth Speakr is created by children who are invited to speak up for the planet while adults are encouraged to listen up to what they have to say. Earth Speakr is a collective artwork that invites kids to be artists. What Earth Speakr will become depends on the Earth Speakrs – their creativity and imagination. The artwork is made up of their thoughts and visions, concerns and hopes. What they create can be playful and whimsical, serious, or poetic. There is no right or wrong, and it is easy for everyone to take part. Earth Speakr invites kids to speak their hearts and minds and participate in shaping our world and the planet, today and in the future.

Children between the ages of 7 and 17 years are invited to participate in an upcycling workshop and are encouraged to bring in recycled and eco-friendly supplies with them. Supplies can be nature-inspired such as foraged flowers, twigs, leaves, pebbles and pines. Alternatively, recycled materials such as plastic bottles, broken wood, toilet paper rolls, cloth pieces, rough paper and other items from their homes.

These materials will then serve as the base for the arts and crafts project and children will learn ways on how to re-use and re-create the purpose of such materials. The children will participate in creating an art and craft project with the help of the workshop leaders.

Using the Earth Speakr website and presentations, the participants will be guided how to create the videos using their mobiles together with their project at the German Maltese Circle in Valletta.

The project created will serve to be animated by the playful interactive technology from the Earth Speakr App. Creating this art and craft project hands-on will help the children to have a multi-sensory approach and enable them to further intensify their message to the adults, policy makers and change makers.

Furthermore, the projects created during this afternoon of crafts will then be showcased at the main event and will be used as part of the discussions at the German Embassy event which will happen two weeks later on the 31st of October 2020, where the participating kids and young adults will have the opportunity to voice their thoughts to the German Ambassador and other policy makers present and actually have a chance to make a change.

At the end of the upcycling workshop, the kids' project will remain as a memento to keep or take to their schools to be exhibited and spread the message even further.
