Do you like Prickly pears? Come enjoy them the 22 of August in Marsaskala!
Prickly pears typically grow with flat, rounded cladodes (also called platyclades) armed with two kinds of spines; large, smooth, fixed spines and small, hairlike prickles called glochids, that easily penetrate skin and detach from the plant. They grow mostly around fields and mostly are used as wind breakers however they are also a very popular fruit with most Maltese and Gozitans. Usually they grow in clusters with torns on the fruit and big green leaves.
These fruits are enjoyed by the Maltese as typical summer fruits (known as bajtar tax-xewk, literally 'spiny figs'), as well as being used to make the popular sweet liqueur known as bajtra. August brings out the fruit’s true nature as cactuses become a riot of colour. While usually served as a dessert, some unusually palatable variations can occur when it’s enjoyed in a starter, main course or refreshing cocktail.
