The Malta Book Festival, held annually, is the most important book event in the Maltese calendar. This event gathers all local publishers and authors under one roof. The National Book Council would like to announce that the Malta Book Festival will take place from the 4th till the 8th of November at the Mediterranean Conference Centre, Valletta.
During this event, all of Malta’s publishers, authors, bookshops and other entities related to books in some way or another come together under one roof to showcase their new material. For a good number of years, this event has been a major book sales event.
Malta Book Festival are keen to influence people into considering this annual event, not simply as a place from where to buy books at bargain prices, instead they want them to consider this event as an enriching cultural and educational experience.
Moreover, the Malta Book Festival is one of a series of very important components of the Government’s plan to make Valletta a European Capital of Culture in 2018 and, in this respect, it is fully supporting the Council in developing and enhancing further this event.
Just imagine .. all the latest books, their authors and publishers congregating under one roof; someone reads out a story, another reads out a poem. Authors debate, artists illustrate and hundreds of books find new homes. Children flock to Valletta for a dream-come-true experience.
In these five days, the general public will be able to visit the majestic halls of the Mediterranean Conference Centre where both local and foreign publishers will be exhibiting and selling their latest work. As per tradition, local distributors and bookshops will also be present, however the National Book Council are happy to announce that they will be joined by a Parisian bookshop and the Sicilian Publishers Association, thanks to help from the French Embassy in Malta and the Italian Cultural Institute respectively.
This year too, the Malta Book Festival will be a one of a kind appointment full of cultural and educational activities for all ages. Maltese authors and publishers will be presenting their latest books in a series of events forming part of the Festival’s cultural and educational programme. And for the first time this year, the programme of events will also include activities that celebrate the winners of the National Book Prize, amongst whom, Godfrey Wettinger, winner of the 2014 ‘Lifetime Acheivement Award’.
The National Book Council would also like to announce that this year’s Malta Book Festival special guests are: Marie Darrieussecq, French author; Maram al-Massri, Syrian author residing in Paris; Romanian poet Dan Sociu and his publisher Bogdan Stanescu; and British publisher of the Maltese anthology “This Fair Land”, Clive Boutle. These special guests will be present during the Festival and participating in several public events.
Weekday mornings at the Festival are dedicated to visiting school children. Both public and private schools are invited to attend the Festival for the Terramaxka Prize: the Prize for Books for Children and Adolescents. Every visiting student will be given a €3 voucher that can be redeemed at any Festival stand during their visit. This initiative has been set in motion so as to ensure that every child visiting the Festival with their respective school takes home a book to read and to keep.
The National Book Council urges the general public to attend this cultural and educational five-day Festival. Shopping for books is possibly the best shopping there is. As popular author Neil Gaiman put it: “A book is a dream that you hold in your hand.” This year’s Malta Book Festival will, once more, open its doors to knowledge, dreams and the fantastic.
