Under the direction of Brian Schembri, the third concert in the series MPO Concert Series at Teatru Manoel, features two works by Maltese composers. Carmelo Pace was one of the earliest composers to delve into 20th century composition techniques, paving the way and teaching a number of leading composers to follow. Veronique Vella’s Concerto for Maria is dedicated to the late Maria Ghirlando, and will receive its first performance on this evening.
The second half is dedicated to Shostakovich’s 9th Symphony, which as he himself stated “differed sharply in character from my preceding symphonies, the Seventh and the Eighth. If the Seventh and the Eighth symphonies bore a tragic-heroic character, then in the Ninth a transparent, pellucid, and bright mood predominates.”
